This painting by Henri Martin captures the poetic and delicate atmosphere that defines the work of this major figure of French Post-Impressionism. Under a veiled and rainy sky, the artist depicts the terrace of Marquayrol, his estate in Labastide-du-Vert in the Lot region, where he lived and worked for much of his life. Earthenware jars and vegetation appear in the foreground, while a bare tree rises with melancholic sobriety.

Martin’s characteristic fragmented brushstrokes translate both the shimmering effect of rain and the diffuse softness of light. Through this pictorial language, he transforms a familiar motif into a poetic vision, imbued with silence and contemplation.

Born in Toulouse in 1860 and elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Henri Martin became one of the most important French painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The landscapes of Marquayrol, painted throughout the seasons and changing light, form an essential part of his oeuvre and reflect his deep attachment to the Lot region.

The Terrace in the Rain belongs to this intimate series in which the artist elevates his daily surroundings into a true poetic laboratory.
