From MAMAC to Galerie Pentcheff: L'ombre, le reflet, l'écho by Laurence Aëgerter

Laurence Aëgerter's tapestries, a celebration of the Mediterranean at Galerie Pentcheff

From November 15, 2024, artist Laurence Aëgerter will be in the spotlight in Nice, as part of an exhibition organized by MAMAC at the Palais Lascaris. On this occasion, a new tapestry by the artist will be presented at the gallery.

Laurence Aëgerter (1972), fascinated by visual illusions, unveils a world where the image and its metamorphoses, appearance and disappearance, are at the heart of visual experience. Through a diversity of photographs, videos, ceramics, tapestries and installations, her contemporary works express the transformation from one state of reality to another.

Presented at Galerie Pentcheff during her inaugural exhibition at Pavillon de la Reine Jeanne, her Longo Mai tapestry series reveals what lies beneath the calanque, challenging traditional perceptions such as Bain de minuit (corals) and Bain de midi (corals). Using phosphorescent threads, her four tapestries offer an immersion under the waters of the Mediterranean, where the terrestrial world is hidden until bodies glow brilliantly in the night.

Through this age-old decorative art, the artist invites the viewer to reverse the perspectives of reality, unveiling a maritime world where his works, blending artistic and artisanal techniques, and reality meet in striking fashion.

Her widely acclaimed works can be found in numerous public collections around the world, from the New York Public Library to the Paul Getty Research Center Institute in Los Angeles, from the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris, which devoted an exhibition to her in 202, to the Musée Borély in Marseille and the MAMAC in Nice, where she will soon be on show at the Palais Lascaris.

Laurence Aëgerter investit le Palais Lascaris, un dialogue entre l'art contemporain et le patrimoine baroque

Laurence Aëgerter, winner of the national photographic commission from the French Ministry of Culture and the CNAP in 2023, invites us to redefine our perception of reality, notably through the exhibition L'ombre, le reflet, l'écho, featuring a selection of works created in collaboration with the Centre du Verre Contemporain de Biot. The exhibition will run from November 15, 2024 to April 7, 2025 at the Palais Lascaris, a historic monument that provides an ideal Baroque setting for the encounter between Aëgerter's contemporary works and Renaissance architecture and furnishings.

Acknowledged and presented at BRAFA by Galerie Pentcheff in Marseille, the artist explores the dynamic between contemporary art and Nice's heritage with the support of the Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain (MAMAC), and the Mondrian Fund.

L'Ombre, le Reflet, l'Écho by Laurence Aëgerter is inspired by Clément Rosset's book Impressions fugitives: L'ombre, le reflet, l'écho (Éditions de Minuit, 2004), and explores the notion of the double, a recurring theme in the artist's work.

Among the exhibition's key works is Le Songe d'Ovide, a monumental glass work by Aëgerter created in collaboration with the Centre du Verre Contemporain, recognized as an Ateliers d'Art de France. Laurence Aëgerter's phosphorescent work is in harmonious dialogue with the Baroque furniture and the 17th-century fresco depicting the metamorphosis of Apollo and Daphne into laurel.

Through this dialogue between decorative art and heritage space, the exhibition features works by contemporary artists such as Marion Baruch, Barbara and Michael Leisgen, Natacha Lesueur, Béatrice Lussol, Liz Magor, Robert Malaval, Ernest Pignon-Ernest, Dorothée Selz and Antoni Miralda.
