“Doesn't the vigor of Jouve's drawings have, like his written signs, the animal suppleness of his drawings of wild beasts lost in dreams full of raucous voluptuousness? This handwriting has the muscular vigor of the lords of the jungle; beneath the fat velvet of the full strokes, you can feel the fearsome claws; they emerge in the fast, sharp strokes. The written signs become epigraphic and lapidary alongside the fantastic visions of the Angkor temples.”
This beautiful magazine, printed with care by Darantière, reproduces facsimile manuscripts, drawings and faces of the greatest contemporary artists and writers. This issue devoted to artists features : Paul Jouve, Albert Decaris, Dunoyer de Segonzac, André E. Marty, Marcel Vertès, Henri Camus.
For the first drawing, Jouve chose to depict Angkor, a journey that would leave its mark on his work. For the second, he presents an anthology of animals. It is worth noting that he took up the sketch of the reclining panther for the illustration of Foa's book Mes grandes chasses en Afrique centrale, (cul de lampe page 119 of the book).
Certificate of authenticity issued by Mr. Dominique Suisse, the artist's successor.
