The South of France can seem like heaven on earth, especially for artists who are discovering it for the first time.
The joy of being able to paint in this huge open-air studio for much of the year is only increased by the power of the landscapes, the explosion of light and the colours that constitute them. In the South, nature is a muse that wears her all her finery. Clothed in light, she watches over the artist's work, inviting him to discover her most exquisite secrets and explore their most intimate graces.
Of the artists we have selected to represent his southern point of view, some, like Henri Manguin, Charles Camoin, Edmond Cross or Louis Valtat came to the South to further their research into painting and decided to stay. Others were only passing through but were nevertheless determined to record their impressions. At the dawn of the 20th century, the region also boasted a number of talented local painters, highly original individuals matured by the sun of Provence to whom we wanted to render homage. René Seyssaud, Auguste Chabaud, Louis-Mathieu Verdilhan and Alfred Lombard fall into this group.
